Kata Shoshinsha (beginner form)

Segment 1 (learned at white belt)
Begin in front position, bring arms up then down to sides and bow. Out-on-elbows to horse stance. [R] side block, [R] low side block, [R] pivot (into [R] bow stance), [L] punch, [L] front kick. Return to horse stance. [L] side block, [L] low side block, [L] pivot (into [L] bow stance), [R] punch, [R] front kick. Return to horse stance.

Segment 2 (learned at yellow belt)

[L] low block, [R] low block, [R] step back (into [L] bow stance), [L] palm strike, [L] back kick (land in [R] back stance), [L] back elbow strike with [R] face guard. [L] pivot (into [R] bow stance), [R] palm strike, [L] back kick (land in [R] back stance), [L] back elbow strike with [R] face guard.

Segment 3 (learned at orange belt)

[L] pivot to horse stance facing 3 o’clock. [L] high block, [R] high block, [L] pivot (into [L] bow stance) and [R] inside block to 12 o’clock, [R] knee strike then set back down, [R] knee strike again then step out to horse stance, [R] outside block, [L] punch (quick follow). Shift to ready position, bring arms up overhead then down to sides and bow. Return to front position.

Kata Chukantai (intermediate form)

Segment 1 (learned at green belt)
Begin in front position, bring arms up then down to sides and bow. Out-on-elbows to horse stance. [R] spearhand and [L] high knifehand block, [L] inside knifehand strike to [L] front knifehand strike (quick follow), wrap head with [L] hand, [L] outside crescent kick (targeting hand) then swing leg back to land in [R] bow stance, [R] punch.

Segment 2 (learned at green belt)

[R] step to forward stance to right corner, [R] outside knifehand strike, [L] pivot to horse stance (keeping angle), [R] high side elbow strike, [R] crossover side kick to right corner (land in horse stance), look to left with open hands on guard (left hand side guard, right hand high guard). Left pivot to [L] cat stance (toward back left corner) and chamber both hands to [R] shoulder, step down to [L] bow stance and double brace block, [L] stepping stool kick.

Segment 3 (learned at blue belt)
[R] pivot to horse stance (facing left corner), double spearhands to solar plexus (keeping angle), [R] step back and pivot to horse stance (towards right corner), pull [R] hand back to high chamber (keeping [L] hand in position), point [L] spearhand to right corner, [L] step back and pivot to horse stance (towards left corner), pull [L] hand back to high chamber and [R] spearhand to [R] corner. [L] step up to inverted stance (facing forward) and double ridgehand blocks to double low knifehand blocks to double outside knifehand blocks (all slow with dynamic tension), [L] hand wraps head and [R] inside crescent kick, cross cover to right.

Segment 4 (learned at blue belt)
Bring right foot into left foot and cross chamber [L] hand to right shoulder, [L] step toward left corner (to horse stance) and [L] downward hammerfist to left side. Bring right foot into left foot (facing front) and double high palm blocks (to both sides of face), look to left then to right, double side knifehand blocks to double low knifehand blocks. Bring arms up overhead then down to sides and bow. Return to front position.

Circle of the Tiger

(Learned at purple OR brown belt)
Segment 1
Chinese bow. Roll-out to ready position, draw back to [L] cat stance facing left corner and [L] circle block, [L] lead leg front kick (step down to [L] bow stance), pull [L] hand across chest (trap) and [R] thrust punch; repeat sequence on opposite side; shuffle forward (toward right corner) and open-hand x-block to double downward tiger rakes (diagonally toward hips), [R] inside leg sweep (turning counter clockwise) to 12 o’clock, turn left to face rear (to [L] forward stance), open-hand x-block, shift to [R] back stance & [L] low parry, return to [L] forward stance then [L] backhand parry & [R] thrust punch.

Segment 2
Pivot left to rear twist stance & [R] downward palm block to right side with [L] hand guard to right side of face, [R] rising side kick (step down to horse stance), [R] pivot to bow stance, [L] low three-quarter punch & [R] high block, pivot left to bow stance (facing front), [R] low three-quarter punch & [L] high block; [R] leg hock with [R] tiger claw take-down (to [R] kneeling stance, stand up & [R] stomp kick then turn [L] to horse stance (facing left side), [R] brace block with [L] forearm trap (catching opponent’s arm in between), switch arm positions (arm break), [R] side knifehand to throat then [R] dragon’s tail flick to eyes, [L] pivot to cat stance (facing rear) & circle right hand down to [R] downward palm block, [R] step back to [L] bow stance & [L] palm strike.

Segment 3
Repeat sequence at beginning of segment 2; draw back to [L] cat stance and bring both hands to [L] shoulder, [R] step back to [L] bow stance & double brace block, [R] tiger stomp toward right corner (to opponent’s knee) then step down to horse stance, roll-out to ready position, [R] hand reach to back of head (trapping opponent’s hand), [L] upward palm to left side, grab back of opponent’s head with left hand, [L] pivot to bow stance & [R] driving knifehand (meeting left palm), both hands grab head then pull down to [R] knee strike, shuffle forward then double knifehand to collarbones, shuffle back then shift to horse stance (facing front), roll-out to ready position. Chinese bow.

Statue of the Crane

(Learned at purple OR brown belt)
Segment 1
Chinese bow then roll-out to ready position. Bring left foot into right foot and low x-block (left over right), left foot step back to back left corner (into [L] bow stance) with [R] cup&saucer, [L] outside block and [R] front punch to back left corner; repeat sequence on opposite side. Turn left to face right corner and bring left foot into right foot, circle arms up & over then bring to crane’s wing position, hop forward with left leg then simultaneous [R] knee strike & headbutt, hop back onto [R] foot then to [L] foot (into crane stance facing front) with simultaneous [R] downward palm block to right side & [L] high palm guard to right side of face.

Segment 2
Circle left hand back to chamber position and right foot step down to [R] bow stance (facing right side), [R] high knifehand block & [L] spearhand, [L] halfmoon forward & [R] downward palm block, 3 punches (left-right-left); hop off right leg and turn left (counter clockwise) to face rear (land in [R] crane stance) with simultaneous [R] downward palm block to right side & [L] high palm guard to right side of face. Repeat sequence at beginning of segment 2 (facing opposite direction); left hand wraps opponent’s head then [R] inside crescent kick (meeting hand), drop right leg down to half-kneeling stance (facing rear) & [R] downward thrust punch.

Segment 3
Push off right leg and turn to right (clockwise) landing in [R] crane stance (facing right side) with simultaneous [R] downward palm block to right side & [L] high palm guard to right side of face, right foot step down to [R] bow stance (facing rear), [R] high knifehand block & [L] spearhand. Bring left foot into right foot with [L] cup&saucer, lunge into [R] forward stance & [L] u-punch (left hand high); repeat previous sequence on opposite side; repeat sequence again on opposite side.

Segment 4
Both hands grab opponent (left hand high, right hand low), circle both arms up & over while turning left (counter clockwise) into [L] cat stance then [R] downward palm block, slide left foot back to halfmoon stance, [R] high knifehand block & [L] spearhand, bring open hands to right side & left halfmoon forward, [L] high knifehand block & [R] spearhand, bring open hands to left side & right halfmoon forward, [L] high knifehand block & [R] spearhand; slide left foot back into right foot then out to horse stance. Roll-out to ready position then Chinese bow.

Kata Kodona (advanced form)

(Learned at red belt)
Segment 1
From ready position, turn [L] into cat stance w/ open hands on guard ([R] hand high), lunge into [L] bow stance w/ [L] snakehand strike, then quickly turn to horse stance & lean [R] to leaning horse stance (keeping hands in position), pivot [R] into cat stance w/ open hands on guard ([L] hand high), lunge into [R] bow stance w/ [R] snakehand strike, then quickly turn to horse stance & lean [L] to leaning horse stance (keeping hands in position), pivot [L] to bow stance & circle [L] hand over to grab head, push down & [R] downward elbow to neck, grab head w/ both hands & [R] knee strike to [R] back kick (in opposite direction), pivot [R] to bow stance & [R] outside tiger rake, bring feet together then [R] scissor kick.

Segment 2
Look [R], shift into [L] back stance back right corner & [R] ridgehand block to [R] spearhand, [L] lower knifehand block to [L] outside ridgehand strike, [R] middle to high side kick (land in horse stance), [R] side elbow w/ [L] hand guard, [R] side back punch, turn to [L] in cat stance & [R] downward palm block, bring feet together then [L] jump front kick (land in [L] bow stance), [R] axe kick.

Segment 3
Turn [L] into horse stance & double back elbow to double palm strikes to chest, [R] pop shift to horse stance & double back elbow to double palm strikes to chest, [R] inside crescent kick then [R] inside elbow (both targeting hand), shift to [R] back twist stance w/ [R] fortress block, [L] turning side kick then look [R] w/ open hands on guard ([L] hand low across torso), [L] inside crescent kick then [L] inside elbow (both targeting hand), shift to [L] back twist stance w/ [L] fortress block, [R] turning side kick then look [R] w/ open hands on guard ([L] hand low across torso).

Segment 4
[R] 180° to horse stance then [L] lower side knifehand strike, [L] pivot to bow stance & [R] spearhand to throat, [L] front knifehand to throat, [R] spearhand to solar plexus (pull [R] hand back to cross chamber), [L] front knifehand to throat, [R] back punch to face w/ [L] hand bridge (all done in quick sequence), [R] leg hock to [R] tiger claw take-down, [R] kneeling side kick (to opposite direction), [R] monkey roll then up to horse stance to left corner w/ open hands on guard, [L] jump side kick, [R] turning inside crescent to [L] turning outside crescent kicks, [L] pop shift to horse stance then double outside tiger rakes to double spearhands to double lower blocks.
